No fewer than 200 persons have been rendered homeless and several persons still missing after suspected herdsmen attacked Tse Sumaka and Tse Atorough Vishigh in Mbadwem Council Ward of Guma, Benue State. The incident happened on Sunday night. An eyewitness said that the herdsmen, armed to their teeth, invaded the villages and began to shoot sporadically and razed about 20 houses. The incident came barely two weeks after the formal launching of the Operation Ayem Akaptuma (Cat Race) in the state. A resident said that the villagers have deserted their home for fear of being killed by the gunmen. “As we speak, I am in a bush with my family. They (attackers) burnt our house and attacked my brother with machete, I don’t even know if he is dead or alive, please inform the police,” the escapee said. The Benue police command is yet to comment on the incident.

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has frowned at comments by its officers regarding plans to rescue the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls. Consequently, DHQ has warned them to stop speaking on details and efforts, especially tactics, being deployed for operations. Director, Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. John Agim, said this on Thursday after service chiefs visited the Theatre Command and Control Centre, Maiduguri, to review the ongoing military operations, particularly the operation to free the pupils. Agim disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has solicited for the co-operation of the media and all stakeholders in the ongoing operation to rescue the abducted girls. U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson would visit Nigeria and four other African countries from March 6 to 13. Spokesperson for the Department, Ms Heather Nauert said Tillerson would also travel to Addis Ababa, Djibouti, Nairobi and N’Djamena. Many persons were feared killed Thursday night after Boko Haram sect launched a late evening attack on Rann, the headquarters of Kala Balge local government area of Borno State, sources said. It was gathered that a village, where hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and humanitarian workers are camping, suddenly came under serious attack by armed Boko Haram gunmen. A security personnel who asked not to be named confirmed to Premium Times via telephone that the attack started at about 7pm. “We got the report that Rann was being attacked at about 7pm and that many persons may have been affected but no one can clearly say the number of dead casualty,” the source said. “We have to wait till morning before one could tell exactly what happened there,” he added.
