Saudi Arabia wants oil price to rise to $60/barrel

Image
Saudi Arabia wants crude oil prices to rise to around $60 a barrel this year, five sources from OPEC countries and the oil industry said. This is the level the OPEC heavyweight and its Gulf allies - the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar - believe would encourage investment in new fields but not lead to a jump in U.S. shale output, the sources said. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, Russia and other producers pledged last year to cut production by about 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) from Jan. 1. The first cut in eight years is intended to boost prices and get rid of a supply glut. Crude prices LCOc1 have risen by more than 14 percent since the November pact but are still only trading around $56 a barrel despite record compliance by OPEC and non-OPEC members. OPEC officials have repeatedly said the group does not target a specific oil price and their focus is on drawing global oil inventories and helping the market to re-balance. But behind cl

SpaceX to send first paying tourists around moon next year

Image
SpaceX plans to launch two paying passengers on a tourist trip around the moon next year using a spaceship under development for NASA astronauts and a heavy-lift rocket yet to be flown, the launch company announced on Monday. The launch of the first privately funded tourist flight beyond the orbit of the International Space Station is tentatively targeted for late 2018, Space Exploration Technologies Chief Executive Elon Musk told reporters on a conference call. Musk declined to identify the customers or say how much they would pay to fly on the weeklong mission, except to say that it is "nobody from Hollywood." He also said the two prospective space tourists, who know each other, have put down a "substantial" deposit and would undergo "extensive training before going on the mission." "I think there's a market for one or two of these per year," he said, estimating that space tourist fares charged by SpaceX could eventually contri

California demands details of Trump administration immigration arrests

Image
California legislative leaders on Monday demanded detailed information from the Trump administration on immigration arrests and raids in the most populous U.S. state, amid growing concern that agents are targeting non-criminals for deportation. Citing reports that agents for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ( ICE) had gone to churches, schools and courthouses to find and arrest illegal immigrants, the legislature used the federal Freedom of Information Act to request all records of enforcement actions taken or planned since Republican Donald Trump was sworn in as president on Jan. 20. Despite saying "he’d only target dangerous criminals, President Trump’s executive orders target practically every undocumented person in California, "said Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León, who signed the request along with Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for comment. California is home to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants

The naira has been gaining steadily against the U.S dollar in three days of trading at the parallel market. The dollar sold for N510 on Tuesday, dropping to N505 Wednesday and fell to about N470 at the end of trading yesterday as more people trooped to the market to sell their foreign currency. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Monday changed its rules in the supply of the foreign exchange (Forex) where it guaranteed currency supply to both small and big users. On Tuesday about $500 million was released through the interbank market where the 23 banks bought $371m. The naira also gained against other currencies such as the Pound sterling which traded at 645 a day earlier but slipped to 610 while the Euro came down from N537 to N507 at the end of trading yesterday. Traders at Zone 4, Abuja, Lagos and Port Harcourt attributed the firming up of the naira to the new policy introduced by CBN. Mr. Mohammed Salisu, a trader in zone 4 said “buyers are sceptical while sellers ar

The Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book were presented at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, in past years the scene of major Samsung launches. This year, Samsung has postponed the presentation of the Galaxy S8, its next key device. Instead, it took the wraps off the Galaxy Tab S3 and the Galaxy Book, which comes in a 10.6-inch and a 12-inch version. The Galaxy Book will run on Microsoft Windows 10. The Tab S3 will have speakers by Harman-owned AKG, Samsung's first use of the brand since agreeing to buy Harman for $8 billion last year. Alphabet Inc’s Google announced on Sunday that it will bring its digital assistant to smartphones running the latest versions of its Android operating system, vastly expanding its reach. The Google Assistant was limited to the technology company’s own products when it was released last fall, but it has steadily been expanding to a broader range of devices. Smartphones running Android accounted for 85 percent of the global market last year, according to tech research firm IDC, compared to 15 percent for Apple Inc’s iOS. The Google Assistant will roll out this week to English speakers in the United States with phones running Android 7.0 Nougat and Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the company said. English speakers in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom will gain access to the assistant next, followed by German speakers in Germany, and the company is working on support for additional languages. Eight soldiers killed as suicide bomber attack military camp in Yemen

Image
A suicide bomber killed at least eight soldiers in an attack on a military camp in Yemen’s southern city of Zinjibar at dawn on Friday, a local official and residents said. The bomber, wearing a military uniform, drove a car that exploded at the entrance of the camp. Ten others were wounded. Yemen has been embroiled in civil war since March 2015 between the internationally recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition, and Iran-allied Houthis. Residents said they heard a loud explosion at dawn in the city, the capital of Abyan province. The bomber is suspected to be an al Qaeda member, the local official said. Similar attacks have taken place in the past few months with Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) a suspect in targeting military posts.

Samsung Electronics Co. to tighten board's oversight on donations

Image
Tech giant Samsung Electronics is tightening board oversight on donations while two senior Samsung Group executives reportedly offered to resign, as the conglomerate struggles with the fallout from a graft scandal that led to its leader’s arrest. Samsung Electronics said on Friday its board of directors will now vote on any financial support to third parties worth 1 billion won (an equivalent of $886,210.56) or more and disclose any such payments publicly. Previously, only payments of 680 billion won or more were subject to board approval. “This move improves transparency in financial aid and appropriation of social corporate social responsibility funds, and strengthens compliance management,” the company said in a statement. President Trump revokes transgender guidelines

Image
President Donald Trump’s administration on Wednesday revoked landmark guidance to public schools letting transgender students use the bathrooms of their choice, reversing a signature initiative of former Democratic President Barack Obama. Reversing the Obama guidelines stands to inflame passions in the latest conflict in America between believers in traditional values and social progressives, and is likely to prompt more of the street protests that followed Trump’s November 8 election. Obama had instructed public schools last May to let transgender students use the bathrooms matching their chosen gender identity, threatening to withhold funding for schools that did not comply. Transgender people hailed the step as victory for their civil rights. Trump, a Republican who took office last month, rescinded those guidelines, even though they had been put on hold by a federal judge, arguing that states and public schools should have the authority to make their own decisions wit

New Music: Terry Apala - "Social Media"

Image
Following his selection as one of  MTV Base’s  artistes to watch this year, indigenous afro-pop/fusion artiste  Terry Apala  has released his first single of the year, a thumping mid tempo song called  ‘Social Media’ . In his signature Apala Hip-Hop style, Terry sings about the unrealistic portrayal of their lives that social media encourages people to do for public affirmation. Despite the strong moral message,  Terry’s  delivery on the  Pitch  produced track is sure to make it a fan favourite. If this is any indication of what he has in store this year, it is truly going to be the year ‘Two Thousand and Apala’. ‘Social Media’ is available on iTunes and all digital platforms.
