News-Men should step aside for women in politics – Akpabio

Image
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said men should consider stepping aside for women to engage in the political process. Akpabio said this on Wednesday at an international conference on women in governance organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies. Akpabio said, “Despite my desire to see more women elected to the National Assembly as senators and representatives, I still feel that it is easier to get more women into appointive offices than into elective positions in our current political space. “This is because the dynamics are different. This is why we must collectively push for a bargain with the male folk to sometimes step aside for women to engage in the political process.” Akpabio said the number of women in the 10th Senate is not encouraging and must be deliberately improved. He further added, “There is the need, also, to raise awareness and challenge gender stereotypes by conducting public awareness campaigns to promote the value of gender

UN Condemns ‘Heinous’ Russian Attack On Ukraine City Centre, Seven Dead

Image
A Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s northern city of Chernihiv killed seven people and wounded more than 100 on Saturday, in what the UN called a “heinous” attack hours after President Vladimir Putin met Moscow’s top army commanders. “It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” said Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine. She was referring to the Orthodox holiday of the Transfiguration of the Lord which saw some in Chernihiv attending church services in the morning. “I condemn this repeated pattern of Russian strikes on populated areas of Ukraine… Attacks directed against civilians or civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” she added. Chernihiv, 150 kilometres (90 miles) north of Kyiv towards Belarus, has been largely spared from major attacks since the first months of Russia’s invasion as fie

Niger Coup: Niger Republic Military Ruler Warns against any attempt of attack

Image
“Our ambition is not to confiscate power,” General Abdourahamane Tiani said in a televised address. Any transition of power “would not go beyond three years”, he said. But he added: “If an attack were to be undertaken against us, it will not be the walk in the park some people seem to think.” He also said: “ECOWAS is getting ready to attack Niger by setting up an occupying army in collaboration with a foreign army,” without saying which country he meant.  Tiani’s warning came after a delegation from West African bloc ECOWAS arrived in the country for a final diplomatic push before deciding whether to take military action against the country’s new military rulers. They met ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, who has been held with his family at the president’s official residence since officers from his personal guard deposed him and seized power on July 26. ECOWAS defence chiefs met this week to fine-tune details of a potential military operation to restore Bazoum if ongoing negotiations

Global:Tens Of Thousands Flee Western Canada Wildfires

The devastating fires in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are just the latest in a summer of dramatic wildfires across the country that have left millions of acres scorched. According to estimates, 19,000 people were evacuated from Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories capital, over 48 hours, its environment minister Shane Thompson said late Friday. The city, home to some 20,000, was largely a ghost town following the largest ever evacuation from the region. Winds have been fanning the wildfires towards Yellowknife, but Saturday there was some relief after overnight rain brought a sharp dip in temperatures, government weather forecasts showed.  ADVERTISEMENT More than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) south in British Columbia, fire also bore down on Kelowna, a city of 150,000 people in the Okanagan Valley. Blazes have already destroyed several properties in West Kelowna, separated by Okanagan Lake from its larger, eponymous neighbor. Among them is the Lake Okanagan Reso

Fuel subsidy: Why refineries are not working – Neliaku

Image
A former Senior Special Assistant to the President (Office of the First Lady), Ike Neliaku, has said that refineries across the country are not working because some persons deliberately frustrated it for selfish gains. Ike in a chat DAILY POST on Saturday, described the state of the nation’s refineries as a shame, alleging that despite so much money that was stolen, the refineries are yet to work. He lamented that the NIPR was not consulted before the removal of subsidy was announced by President Bola Tinubu on May 29, 2023. He said, “Unfortunately, various leaderships across sectors over time, have not really given us the basis of trust which is enshrined in that concept of fairness, equity and justice. So that is one area. “Most Nigerians know that what we have been calling fuel subsidy was not entirely what we are told that it is. How the government has been unable to arrest the issue is something I don’t know because I’m not involved in the process, but that came out from the sub

ADULTS ONLY!! How long should an engagement ring last?

Image
The engagement ring is a symbol of love and commitment between two people. It is traditionally given by the groom-to-be to the bride-to-be as a promise of marriage. But how long should an engagement ring last before the wedding day? There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The duration of an engagement ring will vary depending on a number of factors, including the couple’s individual preferences, cultural traditions, and financial circumstances. In some cultures, engagement rings are traditionally worn for a year or more before the wedding. This is seen as a way to symbolize the couple’s commitment to each other and to give them time to get to know each other better before they tie the knot. In other cultures, engagement rings are typically worn for a shorter period of time, such as a few months. This is often due to financial constraints or because the couple is eager to get married. News-3 hunters are dead after trying to rescue a dog trapped in a hole in the ground, authorities say

Image
Three hunters from Florida and a dog were found dead after they got trapped in an underground cistern partially filled with water in a Texas cornfield, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office said.   Authorities responded Wednesday morning to reports Delvys Garcia, 37, Denise Martinez, 26, and Noel Vigil-Benitez, 45, were trapped in a hole in the ground in northern Bastrop County. Authorities believe while one of the people ended up in the cistern after “possibly” trying to rescue the dog, the other two entered it to rescue them, they said.  “A 4th member of the party went to his truck to summon assistance and call  911 ,” the sheriff’s office  posted  on Facebook. “The water level of the cistern was far below the small opening of the cistern, which was at ground level, preventing anyone from escaping from the cistern, resulting in the deaths of 2 males and one female. All 3 of the decedents were Florida residents …The dog didn’t survive either,” the sheriff’s office posted.  An investig

News-Years After Fall of Kabul, Tens of Thousands of Afghans Are in Limbo Waiting for US Visas

Image
When the  Taliban took control of Afghanistan , Shukria Sediqi knew her days in safety were numbered. As a journalist who advocated for women's rights, she'd visited  shelters and safe houses  to talk to women who had fled abusive husbands. She went with them to court when they asked for a divorce. According to the Taliban, who  bar women from most public places, jobs  and education, her work was immoral. So when the Taliban swept into her hometown of Herat in western Afghanistan in August 2021 as the U.S. was pulling out of the country, she and her family fled. First they tried to get on one of the last American flights out of Kabul. Then they tried to go to Tajikistan but had no visas. Finally in October 2021, after sleeping outside for two nights at the checkpoint into Pakistan among crowds of Afghans fleeing the Taliban, she and her family made it into the neighboring country. The goal? Resettling in the U.S.  via an American government program set  up to help Afghans at
