NEMSA DIRECTS JEDC TO STOP INSTALLATION OF SMART METRES

The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has directed the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to stop the ongoing installation of the new Smart Metres to the people in the state.

 Managing Director (MD) CEO and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engineer Peter O. Ewesor gave the directive while inspecting some of the installed smart metres at Federal Lowcost and Rayfield in Jos, last Thursday.

Engr. Ewesor said that, NEMSA was in Jos following the petition that was written to them by some residents of Jos through the Plateau State Ministry for Water Resources and Energy complaining about the process used for installation of the new smart metres by the JEDC.

He said that, the new smart metres provided by the JEDC was supposed to be tested by NEMSA before installing it to people.

He then directed JEDC to immediately take the smart metres to NEMSA for what it called type testing or routine test, in order to check its quality and accuracy, saying that, there were no NEMSA seal or label on the smart metres, which he said needed to be checked.

Engr. Ewesor said that, every electrical installation in the country was supposed to be checked by NEMSA, especially the imported ones, adding that, NEMSA mandate was to ensure safety of lives and property in the power sector.

He maintained that, people should be paid for what they have consume, adding that, the issue of short-charges on people should also be addressed and stressed the need for good service delivery to the customer at all times.

He also told JEDC that, there were strong needs for them to enlighten people before installing the smart metres to them.

Engr Ewesor equally complained to JEDC about some bad cross arms of 11 KV poll wires and advised people not to build houses under the high tension, as well discourage people on installing metres on wooden poll wires.

SUNDAY STANDARD reports that, some residents who beared their minds on the matter said that, the smart metres were installed in their houses without their consent and described the charges of the new metres as very exorbitant , saying some of them have not been seeing light after the installation of the new metre in their houses.

They also appealed to NEMSA to take serious action on all the issues raised, especially on the challenges being faced with the new smart metres and thanked the Ministry for Water Resources and Energy for taking the matter seriously.

The NEMSA teams from Abuja were accompanied on the inspection by some directors of the Ministry for Water Resources and Energy.

Fuel subsidy: Why refineries are not working – Neliaku

  A former Senior Special Assistant to the President (Office of the First Lady), Ike Neliaku, has said that refineries across the country are not working because some persons deliberately frustrated it for selfish gains.
