  A Russian missile strike on Ukraine’s northern city of Chernihiv killed seven people and wounded more than 100 on Saturday, in what the UN called a “heinous” attack hours after President Vladimir Putin met Moscow’s top army commanders. “It is heinous to attack the main square of a large city, in the morning, while people are out walking, some going to church to celebrate a religious day for many Ukrainians,” said Denise Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine.    The devastating fires in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories are just the latest in a summer of dramatic wildfires across the country that have left millions of acres scorched. According to estimates, 19,000 people were evacuated from Yellowknife, the Northwest Territories capital, over 48 hours, its environment minister Shane Thompson said late Friday. The city, home to some 20,000, was largely a ghost town following the largest ever evacuation from the region.   Three hunters from Florida and a dog were found dead after they got trapped in an underground cistern partially filled with water in a Texas cornfield, the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office said.   Authorities responded Wednesday morning to reports Delvys Garcia, 37, Denise Martinez, 26, and Noel Vigil-Benitez, 45, were trapped in a hole in the ground in northern Bastrop County. Authorities believe while one of the people ended up in the cistern after “possibly” trying to rescue the dog, the other two entered it to rescue them, they said.  “A 4th member of the party went to his truck to summon assistance and call  911 ,” the sheriff’s office  posted  on Facebook. “The water level of the cistern was far below the small opening of the cistern, which was at ground level, preventing anyone from escaping from the cistern, resulting in the deaths of 2 males and one female. So when the Taliban swept into her hometown of Herat in western Afghanistan in August 2021 as the U.S. was pulling out of the country, she and her family fled.   SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court has upheld the state's ban on the sale or possession of  the type of semiautomatic weapons  used in  hundreds of mass killings nationally . In a   4-3 decision Friday , the high court found that the Protect Our Communities Act does not violate the federal Constitution's guarantee of equal protection of the law nor the state constitution's bar on special legislation. The court also decreed that state Rep. Dan Caulkins, a Decatur Republican, a Decatur pawn broker and like-minded Macon County gun-owners who brought the lawsuit had earlier waived their claims that the law infringes on the Second Amendment to own firearms and could not raise it before the Supreme Court. It's a claim Caulkins' attorney vehemently denies.   Two tornado warnings for Oakland and Livingston counties have been allowed to expire Friday night. Currently a flood advisory is underway in Oakland County and Livingston County until 1:15 a.m. There reports of flooding along I-75 and in Rose, Holly and Groveland Townships.  The band of storms will carry with it 60 mile per hour wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Radar indicated rotation. Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur.  Tree damage is likely.  According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 7 miles northwest of Grass Lake, or 9 miles northeast  of Jackson, moving east at 20 mph.         Ukraine announced a "humanitarian corridor" in the Black Sea on Thursday to release cargo ships trapped in its ports since the outbreak of war, a new test of Russia's de facto blockade since Moscow abandoned a deal last month to let Kyiv export grain. At least initially, the corridor would apply to vessels such as container ships that have been stuck in Ukrainian ports since the February 2022 invasion, and were not covered by the deal that opened the ports for grain shipments last year.       But it could be a major test of Ukraine's ability to reopen sea lanes at a time when Russia is trying to reimpose its de-facto blockade, having abandoned the grain deal last month. The United States government has warned its citizens against travelling to Nigeria for security reasons. In the advisory published on the website of its Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs, Americans were warned against travelling to Borno, Yobe and the Northern part of Adamawa State due to terrorism. Americans were also advised against travelling to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano and Yobe states due to kidnappings. The consulate listed coastal areas of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, Delta, and Rivers states with the exception of Port Harcourt as areas prone to maritime crimes, civil unrest, kidnapping and other crimes. WASHINGTON - Government experts believe more than 20 million Americans could have contracted the coronavirus, 10 times more than official counts, indicating many people without symptoms have or have had the disease, senior administration officials said. The estimate, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is based on serology testing used to determine the presence of antibodies that show whether an individual has had the disease, the officials said. The officials, speaking to a small group of reporters on Wednesday night, said the estimate was based on the number of known cases, between 2.3 million and 2.4 million, multiplied by the average rate of antibodies seen from the serology tests, about an average of 10 to 1. “If you multiply the cases by that ratio, that’s where you get that 20 million figure,” said one official.
